NEW YORK (Reuters) – A rare 710-year-old copy of the Magna Carta, among the most important historical documents ever to hit the auction block, sold for $21.3 million on Tuesday at Sotheby’s.
It seems there was no single original Magna Carta document produced at Runnymede on June 15. If there ever were one, not only does it no longer exist, but there is no historical record of it ever having existed. June 15 is the specific date referenced in the 1215 manuscript to its issuance.

When the fair closed in October 1939, the British government extended the document’s stay in the United States to avoid the risk of shipping it home during wartime. The most sweeping deletion of Magna Carta’s clauses from the statute book took place in 1863, when the Statute Law Revision Act repealed 17 of those that remained. These clauses were considered obsolete because they related to medieval tolls and services or had been made redundant by subsequent legislation.
Parliament came into existence during Henry’s reign. Because Magna Carta prevented any monarch from acting on a whim, he needed the counsel and consent of his barons, knights and clerics on matters of law and taxation.
Australia is one of only two countries outside of the United Kingdom to own a copy of the Magna Carta. Originally sealed at Runnymede in 1215, Magna Carta was finally adopted as English law in 1297 and represents the basis of the common law of many countries, including Australia.
