The first national policy on sexuality education in schools was announced in 1938, but sex education was not taught in schools until 1978. It was then called “Life and Family Studies”, and its content consisted of issues related to the reproductive system and personal hygiene.
In 1964, Dr. Mary Calderone, medical director for Planned Parenthood Federation of America, founded the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS) out of her concern that young people and adults lacked accurate information about sex, sexuality, and sexual health (SIECUS, 2011a).
So what time period is Sex Education set in? Creators of the show have confirmed that while the show is set in modern day, they were inspired by the ’80s. Laurie Nunn told Thrillist last year it was a “very conscious decision”.
And yet strangely it appears that Netflix, or at least those in charge of setting age ratings for the streaming platform’s original shows, are on the side of Mr Groff. Each and every episode of Sex Education has been handed an 18 certificate – citing, unsurprisingly, strong sex references.
“When we have sex, what you feel physically sends signals through your nerves to the brain — which reacts by releasing chemicals that make you experience even more pleasure. That is why you get the phrase ‘post-orgasm glow’ to describe that feel-good mood you can experience after sex,” she explains.

Otis: “It’s important to check in.” The relationship between Ruby Matthews and Otis Milburn, started in Season 2 when he lost his virginity to Ruby the night of his party.
Sex Education is widely supported by the vast majority of people in the United States. In Planned Parenthood’s most recent poll on sex education, 93 percent of parents supported having sex education taught in middle school, and 96 percent of parents supported having sex education taught in high school.
