ALICE — an acronym for alert, lockdown, inform, counter, and evacuate — promotes the idea that a “proactive” response to a shooting will enable you to save your life. The company insists that simply locking down a classroom and waiting for help — a “passive” response — will increase your chances of dying.
ALICE strategies are the national standard for preparation and training in responding to violent situations, and after 15 years these strategies are now mandated by the federal government for executive branch employees.

The ‘C-Counter’ in ALICE is not fighting

On the other hand, Fighting implies that you and another individual, freely and willingly, are engaged in contact or hand-to-hand combat.
Law enforcement’s purpose is to stop the active shooter as soon as possible. Officers will proceed directly to the area in which the last shots were heard. The first officers to arrive to the scene will not stop to help injured persons.
ALICE Training typically takes the place of the lockdown drills. The length of training for students may range from 15 to 30 minutes depending on the age of the classroom.
Origins of ALICE Training
ALICE Training program was created out of a husband’s desire for his wife to have a better plan in case of an active shooter event. After the Columbine High School shooting, Greg Crane was a law enforcement officer in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and his wife, Lisa, was an elementary principal.
The purpose of ALICE training is to empower individuals to participate in their own survival in the face of violence. ALICE training provides proactive response options to increase survivability.
