Student’s age at the time of enrollment
This is the age the child was enrolled in school. If the child enrolled in Kindergarten using the k-12 system, 5th grade would be the 6th year of elementary school. Thus, “How old are you in 5th Grade”, the child should be about 10 or 11 years old.
In California, a child must be five years old BEFORE September 1 in order to enroll in kindergarten. Elementary school is kindergarten through 5th grade (ages 5-10), middle school is grades 6-8 (ages 11-13), and high school is grades 9-12 (ages 14-18).

Tenth graders are normally aged 15–16.

Compulsory school age
