We see students drop to part-time status for a semester or two. Maybe they are struggling to pay for school, need to work more, or need to help out their families. And anyone who takes a break from their education doesn’t count toward these rates.
Graduation rate is the percentage of a school’s first-time, first-year undergraduate students who complete their program within 150% of the published time for the program. For example, for a four-year degree program, entering students who complete within six years are counted as graduates.
Why is a school’s graduation rate important? The graduation rate gives students insight into how many students are finishing their degrees in a timely manner once they enroll. It not only is a transparent metric that holds a school accountable, but it also can help a student measure the quality of the school.

At the level of students and their families, challenges that reduce graduation rates include having lower income, lower high school GPAs, limited family support, and poor social integration, among other factors. At the institutional level, a host of additional challenges lower graduation rates.
