The best way to start learning hand lettering is to study letters – all kinds of letters, everywhere. Find hand letterers whose work inspires you and follow them for insights into the design process and the world of hand lettering. Fonts are a good source of inspiration for hand lettering students, too.

The short answer to that question is: No, it is not hard to learn but it is hard to master! Calligraphy is a skill, that takes quite some practice in the beginning until you get the hang of it but you will need years and years of practice until you are a master at it.
To teach yourself calligraphy is a rewarding journey. Not only do you learn a highly specialized skill, the slow process of learning can also have a calming affect in a fast-paced anxiety filled modern world.
Ideally, I’d recommend that you practice calligraphy at least three times per week in 20-minute sessions. That said, only you know your schedule and the repetition you need to master something. You may not have 60 minutes of free time in a week right now, and that’s okay!
Types of Letters
Let us first understand that there are broadly two types of letter, namely Formal Letters, and Informal Letters.
There are five basic classifications of typefaces: serif, sans serif, script, monospaced, and display. As a general rule, serif and sans serif typefaces are used for either body copy or headlines (including titles, logos, etc.), while script and display typefaces are only used for headlines.

For a letter that is more casual in tone, consider beginning it with “Hi, [name]” or “Hello, [name].” This greeting is appropriate for a friend or relative, but don’t begin a business letter this way; it’s a bit too casual. Write a more personal greeting for someone with whom you are intimate, or want to be.
