The format typically consists of 1) the letterhead and full contact information, 2) a salutation, 3) an introduction, 4) an overview, 5) a personal story, 6) a closing sentence and 7) your signature. The three types of recommendation letters are employment, academic, and character recommendation letters.
Each letter should also contain the following six basic sections: address and date, relationship to the candidate, quality of work, individual characteristics, letter summary, and signature.
Font: Use a traditional font such as Times New Roman, Arial, or Calibri. The font size should be between 10 and 12 points, so it’s easy to read.

Recommendation letter format
Times New Roman font always looks very professional, and the font size should be 11 or 12 point. You should address the recommendation letter directly to the person responsible for the application or to the Human Resources department if you don’t have a name (in the case of a company).
If you are writing a general reference letter, you could use “Whom it May Concern” or “Dear Sir/Madam.” If you know the person’s name, it’s better to use the business letter format: include the recipient’s name and address, and address them as “Dear [Name]”.
The rule of thumb is you should give your recommender a full month, but you should never give less than two weeks. In fact, you can even tell them several months ahead of time that you plan to ask them to write a letter when the time comes.
The letter should be between 400 and 500 words, and help the admissions officer quickly assess the applicant. In other words, the letter should never be one, long, block paragraph. Most importantly, the teacher recommendation must provide the reader with concrete examples to support all assertions.

In addition to describing a candidate’s qualifications, a recommendation letter should also promote their character. Leadership skills, dedication, ability to focus, and ability to learn quickly are all skills that are good to highlight in a recommendation letter.
Write a letter for your friend to attach to his application and suggest he mention your name and recommendation in his cover letter. In a small company, talk to the boss personally to say you’d like to make a recommendation via a personal introduction. An informal coffee or lunch meeting can get the ball rolling.
When writing a reference letter, be sure to explain how you know the student, and describe some of the qualities that make him or her a good candidate for the job or school. Use specific examples to demonstrate how the person has shown those qualities. Focus on the specific job or school the person is applying for.
(If you don’t know the student well, and don’t have much to say, add a short paragraph explaining what the course is and why it’s good that the student excelled in it. This won’t fool most people, but will soften the blow of a short letter.) However, don’t ramble: make it succinct and to the point.
