They are made of such ingredients as flour, cornstarch, cream of tartar, oil, and water. They can be colored when made, for example, with food coloring, or have color added after. All types of clay can be sculpted and molded using a variety of tools.
If your clay is too soft, it will be harder to keep it in the shape you sculpted and make reattaching more difficult. It’s best to hollow out your piece when it is leather hard. When your clay is leather hard, it makes it easier to work with.

The two most important elements of sculpture—mass and space—are, of course, separable only in thought. All sculpture is made of a material substance that has mass and exists in three-dimensional space. The mass of sculpture is thus the solid, material, space-occupying bulk that is contained within its surfaces.

Crayola modeling clay
The only similarities this modeling clay has to play-doh is that you can mold it. This clay is very light and pliable and can be dried. When it dries it does not have the same cracks that appear on the play-doh.It also does not stick to carpets and food and hair like play doh does.
Mix the sand and cornstarch thoroughly in the top of the double boiler (being careful not to scratch the bottom of the pan). Pour in the boiling water and mix well. Cook in the double boiler briefly until the mixture has thickened. Should it be too thick, add a little more boiling water.
The cream of tartar helps preserve the playdough.
If you want to preserve your playdough, then make sure your recipe calls for salt.

Don’t wait too long or your playdough will get hard and crumbly. But if you take it off too soon, your playdough will be sticky and a bit grainy. Find the right balance and your playdough will come out perfectly! After removing from the heat, let the playdoh cool a bit, then knead it until it is soft and smooth.
Storing homemade playdough is simple. You can use airtight containers, like plastic rubbermaid containers or you can store it in plastic ziplock bags. Just make sure if you are using ziplock bags you squeeze as much of the air out of the bag as you can when you close them.
