To understand and answer the constructed response essay question, the easiest way is to memorize the acronym “RACE” – this stands for reword, answer, cite and explain.
R – Restate the question. A – Answer the question completely. C – Cite evidence from the text. E – Explain the text evidence.

This easy to remember acronym is our University procedure in the case of a fire.
The RACE written response strategy may not improve students’ reading comprehension, but rather helps educators understand students’ thinking about a particular text. The strategy allows students to better organize and elaborate their written responses clearly showing their thinking on paper.
Begin each answer with one or two sentence thesis which summarizes your answer. If possible, phrase the statement so that it rephrases the question’s essential terms into a statement (which therefore directly answers the essay question). 7. Support your thesis with specific references to the material you have studied.
Restate the question – use the question stem to write your topic sentence. Answer the question – make sure to answer all parts of the question. If there are two questions, you should answer each question in its own paragraph. Cite evidence from the text.

Textual evidence deals with facts in writing and the strategies used to figure out whether or not the information is factual. Textual evidence comes into play when an author presents a position or thesis and uses evidence to support the claims. That evidence can come in a number of different forms.
tips. When answering a question in paragraph form, keep writing as concise as possible, avoiding flowery language. While editing, eliminate all unnecessary words to make sentences as short as possible without changing their meaning.
If you aren’t familiar with the R.A.C.E Writing Strategy it’s simply an acronym that stands for four important words/phrases; Restate the question, Answer the question, Cite evidence, and Explain your answer. Basically it’s a four part system that helps your students break down a response to text.
Summarize the work.
There is some debate as to the proper length a summary should be for this type of paper, but as a general rule, the summary should only span half of the body paragraphs if not less. For a four to five page paper, this section should only take up about two to three paragraphs.
