Thus, “Pi Day” is celebrated every year on March 14th (3/14). … As a way to encourage math and science education many teachers began the tradition of using a PIE to explain Pi to their students.

UPDATE (March 14, 2019, 1:18 p.m.): On Thursday, Google announced that one of its employees, Emma Haruka Iwao, had found nearly 9 trillion new digits of pi, setting a new record. Humans have now calculated the never-ending number to 31,415,926,535,897 (get it?) — about 31.4 trillion — decimal places.
America’ favorite pie is apple pie. There’s no major surprise there, as apple pie ranked the highest with 12 percent of Americans marking it as a favorite. However, the second place winner is the most surprising. Overall, pizza came in a very close second for Americans, pulling 10 percent of the total vote.

“Pie” was the word for a magpie before it was a word for a pastry, from the Latin word for the bird, Pica (whence the name of the disorder that makes you eat weird things). Pica morphed into “pie” in Old French, following the proud French tradition of actually pronouncing as few consonants as possible.
