The price of standardized testing can vary greatly by test. Although there is no real pattern, standardized tests for high school students tend to be the least expensive and exams for graduate or professional schools are on the higher end. For example, AP exams are priced at $92 per exam.
Currently, it costs $47.50 to take the SAT ($64.50 with the Essay portion), and $22 for each of the SAT subject tests, not including the $26 registration fee. The ACT costs $50.50 ($67 with the Writing portion), and for each test there are extra costs for late registration. Advanced Placement (AP) tests cost $94.
Standardized tests scores are good indicators of college and job success. Standardized tests can offer evidence of and promote academic rigor, which is invaluable in college as well as in students’ careers.
One reason wealthier students get higher SAT scores is because they can afford to take the test several times, which has been known to increase a students’ score. Nationwide, the standardized testing industry makes over $1 billion per year on state contracts, and just last week, New York State agreed to pay Questar Assessment roughly $72 million to develop new tests for grades third through eighth.
All told, not counting practice sessions and drills, students spend between 20-25 hours a year taking standardized tests. By the time many Americans graduate from high school they’ve taken approximately 112 of them.
California Achievement Test (CAT)
The California Achievement Test is very popular among Christian schools and homeschools because it takes a bit less time to administer, and contains more traditional values. There are not as many tests included in the CAT, so it can be completed in less time for students to complete.
If a student performs poorly on a standardized test, they can face increased pressure from their parents and peers to do better and be “smarter.” This can lead to students resenting learning and believing that they are worse than everyone else because of their low score.

For Real. In general, it is better to limit the number of times you take the SAT and spend more energy on resources to thoroughly prepare for each test date. From our experience, we would recommend students taking it no more than three times or so.

The state signed a three-year, $45 million contract with the American Institutes for Research to create and implement the new test. It was supposed to be an improvement upon the old standardized test, called ISTEP.

Standardized testing is a huge waste of time and money that could be used for learning in the classroom. Also, you will never know what you got wrong, so you will never learn. The money for testing could be used for better teaching equipment. The tests are overused and don’t even affect your grade when you take them.
