As of 2020, there is 130,930 recorded number of K-12 schools in the United States of America (U.S.A), according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). This means on average there are 2,618 schools per state, with some states like California and Alaska being above and below the curve, respectively.
It is a special-purpose government entity that can be administered independently or be dependent on the local government, such as a city or county. There are approximately 13,800 public school districts in the United States. These districts collectively educate approximately 55.2 million students.
Though the U.S. Department of Education tallies nearly 4,000 colleges and universities, U.S. News included just 1,452 schools in the 2021 rankings. To be eligible for inclusion in the Best Colleges rankings, a school must be regionally accredited and offer four-year undergraduate degree programs.
The number of all public elementary schools (schools beginning with grade 6 or below and ending with grade 8 or below) increased 5 percent between 1970–71 and 2017–18 (from 64,000 to 67,400), and the number of middle schools increased by 546 percent (from 2,100 in 1970–71 to 13,400 in 2017–18).

At the beginning of September 2020, 18.9 percent of K-12 schools were teaching students traditionally (in-person) during the COVID-19 pandemic. This figure increased to 38.8 percent of K-12 schools by February 2021.
As of 2020, there were 942 public community colleges in the United States. Community college can be a more affordable and less time-consuming way for students to earn a degree.
